Editorial. This week in Bali.

So that was high season 2025. Blink and you miss it. It wasn’t much of a busy season this year, but I guess with the dispersed nature of tourism nowadays it can’t come as a surprise. Twenty years ago, the southern tourism area of Bali amounted to Kuta and Seminyak, a distance of around 10 kms.  Now the western strip goes from Uluwatu surf break to Nuanu City and Tabanan, a distance of over 45 kms. There are also the Nusa Dua and Ubud areas, of course, but you get my point, it has gone nuts, tourism has spread everywhere, with small pockets and large centres from one end to the other. Mix in the challenging traffic and there isn’t much reason to go anywhere once you have settled into your accommodation – and basically there is everything you need within a kilometre, anyway. There is so much going on all the time how could a high season stand out anymore?

Just last night I went on my bike for a look around Jalan Petitenget to see what was really happening in late August 2025 and TBH there wasn’t much going on. The big mega venues were firing up as usual, but not many smaller places were busy. There was one place that was kinda interesting, opposite Pison, a bar called Drinking by VIP. An interesting name and it had a feel of The Beat Cafe about it. It’s right on the street’s edge and they have an interesting offer of ‘all you can drink cocktails’ from 8 to 10pm for 100k. Gee, they should be busier. So, we had a couple of, I must say, decent cocktails, before heading down to Klymax to check their Thursday night show with Papu and Gibs. That was also fun and rather busy. By the time I got back onto Petitenget and heading home, the usual hotspots were busy, but it made me think, it’s a shame smaller bars can’t make it along that strip. That’s what Bali tourists loved back in the day. Or is it a point of they just aren’t offering what the punters want?

Last Friday we ended up in a hot little, local night club in Dewi Sri. It’s called Blind Bear Lounge. What a place. It’s like a Denpasar meets Kuta hybrid bar and club, packed out with young local crowd and some confused looking older bule folk – ohh, that was us, but only for a moment. Good times, and definitely worth a look. Sunday we had a blast at the Bonobo show at Mrs Sippy. It was the second time he was there at the pool side venue and the large crowd got right into it. Another great night.
